Spinal decompression surgery is a surgical procedure in which an incision is made in the neck or back to remove foreign matter (bulging discs, bone spurs, thickened ligaments, herniated discs, or arthritic bones) that are causing impingement on your nerves. Eliminating the causative factors will allow your nerves to have more space and help reduce the pain and symptoms you are experiencing. The back part of your vertebrae that helps enclose the spinal canal is known as the lamina. Sometimes, due to arthritic changes or very traumatic events, this bony part of your vertebrae can cause increased pressure on your nerves and subsequently cause pain, numbness and even weakness in your arms/legs. If you have been diagnosed with a bulging or herniated disc and have failed to find relief with conventional therapies, you may be referred for a discectomy. In this procedure, your surgeon removes all or part of the disc to help decompress the area. The extent of the herniation and/or nerve entrapment will determine whether all or part of the disc is removed during the discectomy.
